TERRE HAUTE, Ind., (WTWO/WAWV)– A Terre Haute woman helped rescue a dog and her newborn puppies after the dog, Jersey, led her to a park at 2:30 a.m.

Sarah Valentine, the general manager at the Terre Haute Humane Society said Jersey used her instincts to find shelter for herself and the puppies.

“The mom had gone over to one of the local bars and got the attention of a bartender that was leaving work and she kept pacing back and forth trying to get help. The bartender ended up following her and found the puppies underneath a slide buried in mulch,” Valentine said.

Jersey and her new puppies were taken to the Terre Haute Humane Society.

She said she could tell that Jersey had been abandoned before.

“At first mom was pretty standoffish. She was a little fearful. We realized that it was fear more than anything,” Valentine said.

The puppies are only about a month old. She said it will take sometime before they can be adopted.

“They just got their first round of vaccines and they’ll have two more rounds of vaccines. Then they’ll be spayed and neutered and then the day after they are spayed and neutered, they will go up for adoption,” Valentine said.

However, Valentine said the puppies are having fun at the humane society until they find a new home.

“We’ve introduced toys to them now. So they sit there and they play with them and they toss them around. We have one that likes to climb out of the kennel all the time, so we deal with that. We have to keep raising how high the gate is we have to help mom get in and out sometimes. It’s been fun though. They’re a fun group,” she said.
