VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — In September of 2000, Brian Jones pleaded guilty in a Knox County courtroom to the murder of Vincennes University student Erika Norman..

Norman was last seen with Jones in July of 1999. The next day she was reported missing and police visited her apartment.

“Walking in, I could see blood even before I got to the apartment,” investigator Bob Dunham later said. “And the apartment was in such a disarray with blood swipes on walls and stuff that I knew that there was a violent crime had occurred.”

At the time of the guilty plea hearing, Erika’s family told WTWO that Jones did not seem effected by the outcome of the case. His attorney thought Jones may have still been processing what was happening to him.

“He’s kind of shell-shocked. I mean, most defendants don’t ever really believe that anything bad is going to happen to them, that they’re going to wake up, and it will all be a bad dream and it’s gonna go away,” said Jones’ attorney Mike Steiner.

Jones received 60 years in prison.

He was also charged with raping and murdering Brook Baker. He went on trial in that case a few months later. A jury found him guilty.
