VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A $1.3 million project proposed for Vigo County will have to wait.

Tuesday evening, Vigo County Council members decided to table the Riley Spur project until May, due to cost concerns.

The Riley Spur project could transform a 6 mile long abandoned rail line into a biking and walking trail.

The estimated cost for the project is over $1.3 million dollars and will go from Canal Road to the East side of Riley connecting to Heritage Trail.

Despite this, some homeowners in the area expressed their concern the trail should be patrolled in order to prevent people from stealing property and trespassing.

Vigo County Commissioner Brendan Kearns said they have some work ahead of them.

“It is part of the government process and that’s fine,” Kearns said. “This will give council members an opportunity to talk to constituents to make sure they do make the right decision. We want to make sure that any concerns that land owners had are addressed so that we can move forward with this.”

Construction on the walking and biking trail could start Summer 2023 and open that same Fall.
