County looks to put casino question on November ballot

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Now that the state has paved the way for a casino to come to Vigo County, the next step is for the community to decide.

That decision may be made this year.

During a certification of the May municipal primary, Vigo County election officials addressed the referendum.

According to Vigo County Clerk Brad Newman, the hope is for the referendum regarding the casino to be placed on the November ballot.

The public question, according to EHB 1015, will read “Shall inland casino gambling be permitted in Vigo County?”

The November election is a municipal election, which means city residents will be voting on city seats. But since the casino referendum will be a county-wide issue, Newman wants to make it easy for county residents to vote.

“We have started the process of talking with people and trying to get some locations on the outskirts, so the county residents don’t all have to come in the city to vote,” Newman said. “We’re going to have it set up to where the early day voting centers are open for 30 days, like we did before and county residents can come there.”

The Vigo County Election Board will be having another meeting in the near future to work out more details. They hope to have a plan in place no later than the end of June.
