VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Tuesday night the Vigo County Council is expected to vote on the purchase of land for the new jail.
This is due to a direct order from a federal judge to construct a new jail.
The site is a former golf range behind Honey Creek Mall and is valued at $510,000.
Vigo County Commissioners said that if the council approves the purchase, bids for the construction of the new jail will be sent out nationwide and possibly received back by October.
Commissioner President Brad Anderson said commissioners are hopeful of an approval.
“We’ve answered a lot of questions and the need is still there. The Federal Judge is still involved in the lawsuit,” he explained. “So we think tonight that hopefully with the discussion that we’ve had with all the council and they understand where we’re at and the need for it.”
The council will also have the opportunity to approve the use of part of the local income tax revenue to fund the new jail.
