Construction underway for 1800s-style rental cabin in Fowler Park

VIGO Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — An 1800s-style rental cabin is coming to Fowler Park in 2021.

According to Vigo County Parks Department Superintendent Adam Grossman, the idea of building a rental cabin has been in the works for many years.

Unlike cabins used for park events, such asPioneer Days, the cabin will be available for anyone to stay in.

He said the logs for the cabin were given to the parks department for free and maintenance staff is working to get the cabin off the ground.

The cabin was once owned by a family whose son had taken a blacksmith class. Grossman said the family disassembled the cabin, but had no interest in rebuilding it. Therefore, the family donated the logs instead.

“The cabin has a lot of history. It’s just what we were looking for,” Grossman said.

For now, there will only be one cabin available for rental in 2021.

“It’s going to be a large cabin and it’s going to be an undertaking for us right now to get done. So we will stick to that one right now. It’s going to be quite the process to get that cabin built,” Grossman said.

According to Grossman, the target date for completion is May 1. However, the date could be pushed back due to weather conditions during construction.
