Tonight was another opportunity for the public to express their concerns to the Vigo County council regarding the construction of a new jail.
Money was one motive for public comment. Members and friends of the vigo county taxpayers association took the podium. They told the council it was there responsibility to use taxpayers dollars wisely.
Charlie Williams told the council that 340 was an average jail population and the standard is to build 20 percent more than the population. Meaning 422 beds would be that number in construction and the proposed 504 beds was too many.
“Why build it with more than 422 beds? If you build the jail any larger and if any additional inmates are then brought into that larger jail. The cost will be higher and the staffing will be too low and we will run the risk of having the same problems we have now with an unconstitutional jail,” Williams said.
Some appropriations approved by the council tonight were security equipment for community corrections, allocation for a 23 thousand dollar THPD vehicle from the seized asset fund. And an additional 20 thousand dollars for the Vigo County Assesors budget.
