A new casino may soon be coming to Terre Haute, but there are mixed opinions from the community on this new development.
At the city council meeting Thursday night, there was both support, and opposition for the casino from citizens attending the meeting.
The city council and residents of Terre Haute were given a presentation Thursday night on behalf of a new casino. Alex Stolyar, representing the casino, says there are benefits of bringing a casino to Terre Haute, including hundreds of jobs for local residents, and millions in tax revenue for the city and state.
The president of the Terre Haute chamber of commerce came to express his support for the casino, along with local university officials.
However, not everyone is convinced this is the best thing for the city. Some in opposition say this will have a negative effect on the community.
“I never thought I would see the day that a representative of a public university would think the best thing that a university could bring to a town was to support lousy jobs at a casino,” says a Terre Haute resident.
“In addition to the gaming, we’re going to have a hotel, we’re going to have retail, we’re going to have live entertainment, restaurants, and all of that will be developed at once. This will not be a casino we develop right away, and then we’ll add that stuff later,” says Stolyar.
Despite the opposition, the city council is still in support of the casino.
Some council members say they expect the resolution to pass next week that will urge government at the state level to adopt legislation in favor of creating a casino in Terre Haute.
