VIGO Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The rezoning of property to make way for the proposed jail site in Vigo County behind the Honey Creek Mall has created many opinions over the last few months.
Citizens for Better Government and Vigo County residents showed up Saturday to make sure city council and Vigo County commissioners were aware of what they want, which is a cheaper jail.
“People want it to make sense, but it doesn’t seem to make sense,” said Lisa Spence-Bunnett.
During the forum, the group shared the results of their petition on the proposed jail site.
“85% of the people that we talked to in the petitioning process were against the existing plan by the commissioners,” said Charlie Williams.
The petition was taken door-to-door and in front of businesses in the local community. it received 1,104 signatures.
The group’s poll on Facebook asked the community if they want a less expensive jail at the courthouse.
“We let it get shared wherever it was going to be shared and we just wanted to see what that reaction was,” Spence-Bunnett said.
They said the results made a clear statement.
“The county commissioners have tried to dismiss the general public’s saying it’s just nine rowdy people. Obviously this data with over a thousand petition signers and over 1,500 in a Facebook poll contradict the commissioner’s claims,” Williams said.
Citizens for Better Government hope the results will get the attention of the council.
“60% of the people in Vigo County live in the city where we’ve done most of our petitioning and the city council members will be voting on a matter that even though it’s labeled the county jail, it’s certainly a city-county matter,” Williams said.
The next city council meeting on August 1 will allow the council to vote on the rezoning for the jail. If not, it will be done on August 8.
