UPDATE: Child dies following Parke County crash

UPDATE: According to the Parke County Sheriff’s Department, the child involved in Monday’s crash succumbed to his injuries Tuesday.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday in Indianapolis. 


PARKE COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A young child is in critical condition after a wreck in Parke County.

It happened Monday evening on Mecca Road, east of Mecca.

The Parke County Sheriff’s Office says 55-year-old Pamela Smith of Mecca was traveling eastbound when her vehicle left the roadway for an unknown reason.

The vehicle struck a utility pole, came back onto the road and then left the roadway again.

Authorities say a 5-year-old in the vehicle suffered serious injuries and is in critical condition.

Smith refused medical treatment at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

Parke County EMS, Adams Township Rescue and Mecca first responders assisted at the scene.
