Casino referendum passes in Vigo County

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The votes are in, and an overwhelming majority of Vigo County voters want a casino.

The referendum kept a steady lead as election results came in Tuesday, with final numbers showing 63.44% in favor of the casino.

During the latest legislative session, a bill passed allowing a casino license in Gary to move to Vigo County, but only if residents voted for it to happen. Gov. Eric Holcomb signed the bill into law in May.

The next question is, who will build the casino? The answer to that will come by the first quarter of 2020.

Bids are being accepted for potential casino license holders until Dec. 1.

Groundbreaking on the casino could be as early as spring of 2020, with construction expected to last 14 to 18 months.

One company vying for the license is Spectacle Entertainment. In July, the company signed a letter of intent with Hard Rock Casino to franchise the Terre Haute casino.
