Two words come to mind when attending Carb Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway: excitement and celebration.

The event is always celebrated the Friday before Race Day. It is a chance for fans to kick off the biggest racing weekend in the world with a final practice for drivers, a pit stop competition and a big concert–all coming together to make the day quite a party.

While fans love the race, they also look forward to the big celebration day.

I love race day, but I almost think that Carb Day is more fun.”

– Nicole Braun

“The music’s good, the people are nice, and the drinks are good. I think it’s very important, but i think it’s just a fun thing that we can celebrate,” Amy Kreisle-Cosby added.

Those who attend Carb Day once keep coming back year-after-year.

“I’ve probably been out here five or six times before, everyone’s just here to have a good time,” Braun said. “It’s fun to see the cars going by, having the last day of practice here, and mostly because everyone here’s excited, and they’re ready for the weekend, ready for the race.”

It becomes a family tradition with long-time attendees excitedly bringing the next generation.

We are from Terre Haute. We actually live in Illinois now, but we have partnered up with all of my buddies here and all of my relatives. My boys here, it’s the first time they’ve come to Carb Cay. Me and my buddies, it’s like the 30th maybe, 28th year we’ve come.”

– Mike Staggs

Some even travel for miles to attend.

Been coming here for a long time, got super fans from Washington D.C. coming in, my brother and his friends from Oklahoma, it’s a great environment for us. It’s a celebration of this country on Memorial Day weekend, and everybody is together. There’s great fellowship and everybody has a super time.”

– JP Moery

Local fans love the Terre Haute tie to the event.

“It’s the track, it’s what you do,” Staggs said. “You know, Tony Hulman is from Terre Haute, that’s why we love the Haute, right?  So, it’s just a thing we keep coming out supporting the track, supporting everything out here.”

This year’s Carb Day concert is Foreigner and Kool and the Gang. Saturday, Zac Brown Band is headlining the Legends Day concert.
