TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Vigo County Capital Improvement Board set a maximum budget for the Terre Haute Convention Center at $24,633,566.
The board approved the Guaranteed Maximum Price Proposal amount Wednesday during a regular meeting.
“It’s obviously good news for Vigo County and the CIB that we were able to stay within the construction budget for a project of this size,” states Steve Bauer, vice president of construction services at Nations Group, serving as project manager. “There are so many moving pieces and extensive work to pull together all elements – property acquisitions, estimates, partners, community leaders – everyone has to be moving in the same direction to accomplish a project of this importance and magnitude. Being able to do all of that within the original scope and budget is a win for Vigo County.”
The convention center will have the ability to accommodate 1000 people for annual events.
The plan also includes an outdoor walkway and sitting area, creating much-needed green space in downtown Terre Haute; a two-story volume space Larry Bird museum, which will be considered an auxiliary space for additional events; multiple opportunities for smaller conferences and break-out meetings; and a 460-space parking structure addition.
The groundbreaking for the project is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 6 at the intersection of 8th Street and Wabash.
The event is open to the public.
