BRAZIL, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Brazil Concert Band will perform its newest concert piece, which honors a legendary composer, at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15, in Forest Park; the event will go on rain or shine.
The BCB and Director Matthew S. Huber will honor Fred Jewell, known as the Indiana March King, with a concert of all Jewell compositions. A Worthington, Ind., native, Jewell was born in 1875 to a musical family. At 16, he left home for life as a circus musician, playing the euphonium and cornet and conducting circus bands for the next twenty years.
Jewell played in the Brazil Concert Band during the off season in the early twentieth century. His son, Fred Jr. grew up and became an attorney. Fred Jr. played E flat clarinet in both the Brazil Concert Band and the Jackson Township Community Band.
During its performance honoring Jewell, the BCB will play many of his works, including “Cloth Of Gold”, “The Pumpkin Center Cornet Band”, “The Old Circus Band”, “The Scarlet King”, “At Break Of Dawn”, “A Passing Fancy” “March Of The Prophets”, “Trumpets Of Victory”, “At Evening Time” and “Pageant Of Progress”.
The concession stand will be operated by the Clay Youth Soccer Club. They will be serving Italian beef.
