Fresh on Cypress at Miller farms is a “you-pick” blackberry operation in southern Vigo County and right now they have an abundance of berries ready to be picked.
The signs off of US 41 leading you to the farm might be small and not many people know about Fresh on Cypress but that is all about to change.
“It’s just a wonderful start for Blackberry season for Miller’s. They are really great neighbors and we are really excited for them to start this venture,” said Susan Hayhurst.
It’s the first year the “you-pick” berry farm is open to the public an opportunity for Miller Farm to give back to the community.
“We have 80 acres that we own here and we were looking at a way to kind of support us through retirement on our place. So we put in an acre and a third of the blackberries. Our son and daughter in law are partners in it with us,” said Marilyn Miller.
“I picked not to just enjoy eating them all day long but I like to freeze them to make cobbler and put in muffins and so forth all year,” says Hayhurst.
While customers enjoy picking their own fresh produce, picking allows the plants to reproduce quickly. And this year the warmer winter sped up the growing process. Right now, the Millers have an abundant amount of berries and are trying to spread the word to get people out in the fields.
“We were really not able to estimate exactly what the yields would be like this year so we’re starting a kind of slow with the U-pick. We need to get the word out. We think there’s a lot of people I would be interested but we’re also going to be at those farmers markets and moving more more berries that way,” said Lindy Miller.
Fresh on Cypress plans to have four types of berries by the end of the year all coming in season at different times.
“We start about two weeks ago and the Natchez are right in the middle of it so we really need to get people to come on out because they are in their prime and then we will be moving and having different types all the way through the first of September,” said Miller.
Fresh On Cypress is located at 15200 S Cypress Street. They are opened Tuesday through Saturday from 8am to dusk and Sunday from 12 to 4pm. You can follow them on Facebook here.
