VIGO Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A bench trial has been set for the contested Vigo County Auditor’s race.

Current Vigo County Auditor James Bramble and his lawyer Bill Smock, presented their argument to Judge Lucky Reddy in a hearing Thursday. The hearing was done through livestream.

On November 12, Bramble filed a petition claiming that Auditor-Elect Rebecca Coleman is ineligible to hold the office due to two past felony convictions.

According to Smock, Indiana law states that a convicted felon cannot hold public office. He argued that Coleman should not have been allowed on the ballot.

Coleman was also present at the hearing, representing herself. Judge Reddy gave her the opportunity to respond.

Coleman stated, “I did have two felonies 23 years ago. As far as I’ve known for 23 years, they were set aside.”

After hearing both arguments, Judge Reddy ordered for a bench trial to be scheduled on December 1 at 1 p.m. at the Vigo County Courthouse. There, evidence will be presented from each side.
