Bariatric surgery can help a person lose weight and relieve chronic health problems

Paris, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) Obesity can cause all sorts of health problems from diabetes to heart disease and even premature death.

For some people, bariatric surgery is an option.

According to the CDC, obesity affects nearly 40 percent of the adult population here in the U.S.

The extra weight is problematic leading to a variety of health issue

Horizon Health offers bariatric surgery to help.

Dr. Yaniv Cozacov, M.D. said, “We do this laparoscopically, minimally invasive, small incisions, small cut through the belly. People stay in the hospital for 1 or 2 nights.”

The surgery reduces the size of a person’s stomach. A person then loses weight and gains better health.

Research shows weight loss can help with diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, infertility and migraines, among.. many other things.

“A lot of people have trouble with exercising. Just because of the excess weight, but when you lose 60, 80 or 100 pounds. It’s easier for you to exercise and you’re more likely to do that,” added Dr. Cozacov.

The doctor says it also helps a person on an emotional level, “They form more relationships. They get married more and we do think that gives a boost to self-confidence. You’re being more attractive to the other side.”

The weight loss surgery is appropriate for those who have BMI above 40 or above 35 with a medical problem related to obesity.

Horizon health offers videos to help guide a person through their decision making process to see if the surgery is right for them.

Dr. Cozacov says people who undergo bariatric surgery are normally back to work after a week, but some require two weeks.
