The Vigo County Area Planning Commission voted Wednesday night to change the name of a street familiar to local residents.
County officials say they are correcting a mistake that was made a long time ago by changing Bowen Road back to its original name, Darwin Ferry Road.
The president of the Area Planning Department, Fred Wilson, says it will be a meaningful change to residents in the area.
“It’s the only surviving ferry, river ferry crossing that still operates,” says Wilson.
According to Wilson, it’s been Darwin Ferry Road since about 1818. He says it’s the only surviving river ferry crossing that still operates on the Wabash River.
Wilson says the historic significance of Darwin Ferry Road can be traced back to some of the first families to settle in Vigo County. They chose to settle in the areas around this road.
