Long-time Jeopardy host Alex Trebek made a surprising announcement via the game show’s social media accounts Wednesday telling his viewers he has cancer.
Trebek said he was among 50,000 other Americans each year who are diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer.
He chose to make the announcement himself in keeping with his “longtime policy of being open and transparent with our Jeopardy fan base” and to prevent viewers from hearing “overblown or inaccurate reports.”
While Trebek acknowledged the prognosisfor his condition is “not very encouraging,” he said he plans to keep working and to fight his disease.
“With the love and support of my family and friends, and with the help of your prayers also, I plan to beat the low survival rate statistic for this disease,” he said.
He added a bit of humor by noting he was contractually obligated to beat the disease because he has to host Jeopardy for three more years.
“So help me keep the faith and we’ll win. We’ll get it done,” he concluded.
