641 Ramp Updates May Save Some Miles

News
For about five weeks now, drivers around Exit 11 have been battling ever-changing construction.

But a recent change will hopefully alleviate some of the stress.

A new entrance ramp has opened giving drivers access back to I-70.

An interstate so close to where we live and work can be such a plus.

But when access to that highway is closed, it does cause some issues.

Now, construction progress has given drivers access back to eastbound I-70.

For many drivers and residents off of Exit 11, each day presents a new challenge and maybe even a new arrangement of orange cones for this large construction area.

INDOT awarded the State Road 641 project to Beaty Construction Inc. $46.8 million.

This is the last section of the bypass to be constructed and it runs from just South of Moyer road to the I-70 interchange.

The State Road 641 project includes the construction of a new four-lane full access control roadway.

But what drivers see right now, is an Eastbound I-70 entrance ramp, accessible from only North bound lanes.

“Well obviously, it’ll help,” says Brent Hawkins, a local driver. “I mean, just getting on 70 if nothing else. I think when the bypass is totally open and workable, to get from this side of town to the South side on 41, it’s just going to be awesome.”

To gain access to I-70 Eastbound ramp, you no longer have to go all the way to the Brazil/ Clinton exit, Exit 23.

Instead, you can come here to the round-a-bouts, continue all the way through until you’re heading North once again, and from there you finally have access to the Eastbound on ramp.

“But still, from here to the south side is impossible,” says Hawkins.

There is still the expectation that the work will be completed by the end of this year.

“Right now, the plan is to get the bypass open late this year, I don’t have an exact date yet, but, we’re still shooting to get it open to traffic by the end of the year,” says Debbie Calder, INDOT communications director.

INDOT does want to remind drivers to use caution while in construction areas.

At this time, there is no south bound option to gain access to I-70 East.

Drivers again must follow the detour and obey the rules of the road.
