A five-year-old boy is fighting for his life at Riley Children’s Hospital after a devastating attack at his home on Bayou Street in Vincennes. The suspect is his own father.
Vincennes police say 53-year-old Robert James Baldwin suffocated and strangled his son using a device.
WTWO first reported the disturbing details Tuesday after Baldwin called 911 saying, “I killed my son,” according to police.
“The individual that called in was the child’s father. And he did indicate on the phone that he had, he had killed his son,” says Vincennes Chief of Police, Dusty Luking.
Officers and fire officials gave the child CPR when they arrived at the house Tuesday. The child was first sent to Good Samaritan Hospital, then air lifted to Riley. Officers say he remains in grave condition.
“Obviously this was a, this was a heinous crime. It was very heart-wrenching for officers and all involved. You know you just don’t see something like this every day with a five-year-old little boy,” says Chief Luking.
Several families on the street also have small children, but they’re not allowed to play on Baldwin’s swing set next door.
“We just keep her inside. Not let her go outside a lot,” says Baldwin’s neighbor.
The neighbor describes Baldwin as crazy, and reported hearing him yell at his child.
“Yeah well we always hear him scream at the kids, so but we were not really sure what happened,” says the neighbor.
Now officers are standing by hoping the child will recover.
“You know you’re talking about a five-year-old little boy that was at the start of his life. He was in preschool at Vigo Elementary here in Vincennes, and so you know, you just don’t think about something like this happen. Let alone you know, with, with a father being involved as a suspect in this crime,” says Chief Luking.
Chief Luking says the police haven’t dealt with the Baldwin family very much, but Child Protective Services has previously been involved.
Police say the five-year-old’s mother was not home at the time of the suspected attack, adding she was at work.
Baldwin is in the Knox County jail for attempted murder. His bond is set at one million dollars.
