1 killed in pedestrian crash near Covered Bridge Festival


VIGO CO., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — One person is dead after being hit by a vehicle Saturday morning.

According to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 8:32 a.m. on U.S. 41 near Evans Avenue in front of North Pines Trailer Court. The sheriff’s office says this location is where vendors were set up for the Covered Bridge Festival.

The driver of the vehicle and a witness told officials that the pedestrian walked in front of the vehicle and neither the driver or the pedestrian were able to avoid the crash.

Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse said the victim was given CPR by an off-duty firefighter and an AED by a responding deputy.

The victim was later airlifted by Lifeline to Regional Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Sheriff Plasse said the driver of the vehicle received chemical tests that came back negative for alcohol and drugs.

According to Sheriff Plasse, the crash was an accident and there are no current charges. The victim was reportedly not from the area and her identity has not yet been released.
