Nayoro, Hokkaido (NBC) –
A beautiful phenomenon known as a sun pillar appeared in northern Japan Wednesday.
It occurred in the prefecture of Hokkaido as temperatures dropped to 27.4 degrees below freezing in the city of Nayoro on the morning of February 15.
The solar pillar phenomenon happens when light reflects on diamond dust, or tiny ice crystals, in the air.
