TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Terre Haute Community Band is getting ready to wrap up its summer concert season with a show titled “Music Men”.

The final concert is scheduled for Saturday, August 6 starting at 8 p.m. in Fairbanks Park. Admission to the show is free.

The concert will feature “The Music Man” by Meredith Wilson, some of the band Queen’s greatest hits, and selections from Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame among other musical pieces.

The Terre Haute Community Band does not have 76 trombones but the trombone section makes up for the lack of numbers with a strong and robust performance of this keynote number.

The show will also be the final concert for Principal Conductor Yvonne Newlin who is retiring after 18 years with the band. The final number “Fairbanks Finest” was specifically composed for the Terre Haute Community Band and dedicated to Yvonne Newlin by composer Malinda Zenor, a Hoosier and graduate of Depauw University.

“I think it’s probably going to be a bittersweet moment for her,” President of the Terre Haute Community Band James Chesterson said. “We’ve worked very closely over the last 18 years to prepare programming for the people of Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley for that matter. We have members that come from all over the Wabash Valley and audience members who come from all over the Wabash Valley as well.”

Chesterson added that during Newlin’s time as Conductor the band has been able to increase its musical assets and publicity.

“We’ve increased awareness in the Wabash Valley that Terre Haute actually has a band. A lot of people didn’t know that when we started, so it’s been a good ride.” Chesterson said.
