PARIS, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — Registration has opened for the sixth annual 3-mile race in honor of the late Dr. James Acklin.

Sponsored by Horizon Health Foundation and Paris High School, the event is set to be run on the morning of Saturday, August 27 at Paris High School.

Those wishing to join in on the fun must register by Friday, August 5 in order to guarantee a race t-shirt. Otherwise, participants may sign up right up until just before start time.

A three-mile race open to the public will start at 7:30 am at the school’s Cross-Country Team Race Course. Anyone is welcome to participate by running and/or walking. Following the open race, an invitational for local cross-country teams will begin.

The cost of the open race is $30 per person and includes a T-shirt. Shirt sizes must be specified on the registration form. If you are unable to participate or would prefer to donate, you can do so by filling out a donation form. All proceeds will benefit the Horizon Health Doc Acklin Scholarship. The first scholarship was awarded in 2017. Since then, 12 Paris Cooperative High School Seniors have been awarded $1,000 each toward furthering their education in the medical field.

Dr. James Acklin passed away in August of 2015. He retired in 1994 after 34 years of service as a family physician at Paris Community Hospital. He was also part of a historic Paris High School cross-country team that captured four consecutive state championships from 1946 to 1949.
