March is National Nutrition Month. A reminder to all of us that what we put into our bodies affects how we feel and can help prevent diseases.
A dietician at Paris Community Hospital, Jan Coombe, says eating a balanced diet is important. It should include lots of vegetables, some fruits, complex carbs, beans and lean protein like poultry or lean red meat.
“Can and frozen vegetables and fruits can work very well and the can work into a budget very, very adequately. All you need to do is watch for little things like sodium and extra sugar and corn sweeteners,” said Coombe.
A portion of vegetables is equal to the about the size of your palm, a portion of meat is roughly equal to a deck of cards. Coombe also suggests avoiding soda.
