People in Vincennes celebrated Wednesday as the city broke ground on the new Rainbow Beach pool.

The $3.8 million project will replace a pool that is several decades old and that officials say no longer meets the needs and wants of the community.

In May, Vincennes citizens voted for the project to move forward and now work could start as soon as next week.

Mayor Joe Yochum says this means great things for the city.

"We've got a lot of citizens that are leaving our community and going to surrounding communities for their swimming activities. We're going to have a facility that our citizens can stay here in Vincennes and swim, and enjoy, and hopefully attract people from the surrounding areas," says Mayor Yochum.

Rainbow Beach is scheduled to be open Memorial Day in 2014.
