Vigo County Billed $20,000 for Care of 40 Roosters

Vigo County is being charged nearly $20,000 for the care of 40 roosters.

The animals were part of a cock-fighting ring police busted earlier this year.

They  were held at the Terre Haute Humane Shelter as evidence.

Last month the shelter sent the Vigo County Commissioners a bill for $17,000 for their services.

Since then they've added a 10% late fee to the amount due.

The commissioners say they don't have the money to pay the bill.

They went before the Vigo County council for help Tuesday night.

The council wants more information from the Terre Haute Humane Society.

"Everyone, all seven council people, didn't understand how it took $20,000 to keep 40 roosters for 40 days," Mike Morris, a Vigo County Counselor said.

No one from the Terre Haute Humane Shelter was at Tuesday's county council meeting.

The commissioners plan to meet with the shelter at some point next week.
