Nikki Russell was sentenced to 21 years in prison on Tuesday, but because of Indiana law will only have to serve ten. Russell and her husband, Larry, were arrested last November, after their 17-year-old adopted son was found walking along the side of the road in tattered clothing and no shoes.
A mother who abused and neglected three of her children will spend the next decade behind bars.

Russell and her husband, Larry, were arrested last November, after their 17-year-old adopted son was found walking along the side of the road in tattered clothing and no shoes.

During the investigation police revealed that the children had been beaten, ducted taped to their beds, and were malnourished.

"No one should be treated like this, no one. Not an animal, not a human being, not children case, this is a case that caused high emotions for myself and the others involved were handling this case. State is a statement that we are going to try to get the maximum sentence when someone is treated like this. It's just terrible what happened in this case, it's terrible," said Vigo County prosecutor Terry Modesitt.

Because Russell only has to serve a fraction of her sentence, Modesitt says he plans on addressing state legislators about changing the law.
