Vermillion County, IN man wounded after accidental gun shot

William Simonton, 20, of Newport, is in the hospital after his father's handgun accidentally discharged and shot him in his leg. Police say his injury doesn't appear to be life threatening.

A Vermillion County man is at the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound.

The Vermillion County Sheriff's Department says William Simonton, 20, of Newport, was shot accidentally. It happened in the parking lot of Darrel's Custom Firearms in Cayuga just before 7 p.m. Thursday.

Police say Simonton's father, Charles, had just purchased a 22 caliber handgun from the store and was leaning into a pickup truck when the gun discharged and shot William in the leg just above his knee.

William was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital. Police say his injury doesn't appear to be life threatening.
