UPDATE: One Dead; Suspect in Custody After Shooting Near ISU

Police arrested William Mallory, 21, of Indianapolis. He's held at the Vigo County Jail without bond on an initial charge of murder.
Gunshots kill one Terre Haute man, and two others remain hospitalized for their injuries.

It all happened just before 3 a.m. near the Ballyhoo in Terre Haute.
Fourteen detectives, along with several law enforcement agencies, responded to the scene early this morning, and officials say that quick police - and team - work is the reason the 21-year old shooting suspect is already behind bars.

"The university is shocked and saddened by this. It's always a tragedy when these thing occur," said Indiana State Police Police Chief Bill Mercier.
A tragic start to the school year as gunfire erupts on an Indiana State University parking lot early Friday morning.
"These are an unfortunate reality of life. They occur not just here but around the country," said Mercier.

Shots struck three young men, all of Terre Haute: 21-year olds Dante Pettus and Terrance Trotter were wounded.

Both are in the hospital,  and one has been flown to Indianapolis for treatment.

Dustin Kelly, 24,  a former ISU student, was pronounced dead.
"We're going to  do everything that we possibly can in these serious instances," said Terre Haute Assistant Chief of Police Shawn Keen.

Police have arrested this man for the crime - 21-year old William Mallory, who's from Indianapolis but goes to school at ISU.

Mallory turned himself in to Indianapolis police on Friday.

"We're fortunate. We probably wouldn't have been as far in the investigation without all that manpower there initially," said Keen. "I can't say enough about how much they helped us in this investigation."

Police say there was an altercation inside the bar that spilled into the parking lot.

They believe it was an isolated incident, but are still gathering evidence and taking extra precautions.

ISU  is delaying two events: Friday's  "Back to School" Late Night Dance and Rec Fest have been postponed until further notice.

The college will also beef up patrols on campus throughout the weekend, and officials are calling for a ceasefire.

"He [Mallory] will be dealt with. We had three people shot, one dead and we don't want anymore violence because of this. People just need to remember that's the case, let us do our job and not make this any worse than it already is."
William Mallory has already been transported to the Vigo County Jail.

He's held without bond on an initial charge of murder.

He'll appear in court on Tuesday.
