Terre Haute NAACP to Honor Legacy of Medgar Evers Friday

One of the organization's longtime members, Theressa Bynum, has a personal connection to Evers making the event all the more meaningful for her.
Tomorrow the Greater Terre Haute NAACP will honor the legacy of civil rights activist Medgar Evers at their annual Freedom Fund Banquet.

One of the organization's longtime members, Theressa Bynum, has a personal connection to Evers making the event all the more meaningful for her.

"I was just coming out the door for work when it came across the news that Medgar Evers had been assassinated, June 12," Bynum said.

Its been 50 years since Evers was shot and killed in the driveway of his Mississippi home.

"It was shocking and I can still feel what i felt then because I did know him," Bynum said.

Longtime Terre Haute resident Theressa Bynum knew Evers through her involvement with the NAACP.

Evers was a field secretary for the organization, she was a young member.

"As one of the youth leaders in my community I got a chance to go to some of the organizational meetings we had in the regions, and that's where i met him," Bynum said.

Decades later she still recalls the lessons Evers taught her, and other young students, Who were fighting for equality at the height of the civil rights movement.

"Have respect for self, our own race, to have respect for principle and to stand up for what's right," Bynum said.

And what seems right is honoring the legacy of a man who died fighting for the idea of equality for people of all races.

"His life was threatened many times and he recognized that he might die. But one of the things he's quoted as saying is you might kill a man but you can't kill an idea. That stuck with me," Bynum said.

Tickets for the banquet are still available, but they must be by purchased by Thursday evening.
