Tech Talk-New Gadgets-Getting Started

Is it working?
Smartphones and tablets are always hot sellers around the holiday. Just like that Barbie Dreamhouse, the electronic gadgets involve a bit of work to make them work perfectly.
I know you're infatuated with your new iPad or Kindle -- or whatever electronic toy you found under the tree. The time may come when you leave it somewhere, or maybe it gets stolen by someone on Santa's naughty list.
With that in mind, take a moment to protect your device. Turn on the screen lock setting and set a passcode. Its the easiest way to keep your information safe.
You should then download or activate any lost-device features. Apple has Find My iPhone, Android devices use the Android device manager.
Next, buy a case -- preferably one that offers good protection. Broken and scratched devices can cost hundreds of dollars to fix.
Don't let your new toy be a drain on your finances next year -- find a way to monitor your usage.
Apple and Android devices allow you to track data usage under the settings. You can also install third-party apps to monitor usage. Video and music streaming apps chew through tons of data. Make sure you are on a wireless network before you stream your favorite shows.
