Sycamore Excitement Continues to Grow for Larry Bird's Return

On Saturday, a Larry Bird statue will be unveiled outside of ISU's Hulman Center and current Sycamores are already getting excited about the Legend coming back to his alma mater. You can catch Saturday's ISU basketball game right here on NBC 2. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
We're celebrating Larry Bird all week long as we gearing up for the Saturday dedication of the new Larry Bird statue outside ISU's Hulman Center.

We headed to campus to find out just how excited current students are the Legend's return.

"When people think of Indiana State, Larry Bird definitely the first name it comes to mind," said Tommy Lynch, director of ISU's Student Government Association.

It's been more than 30 years since Larry Bird attended Indiana State University, but current Sycamores are as excited as ever to share a campus with the famous alum.

"It's quite the honor to have him come back and represent the school," said ISU junior Matthew LeCleir.

Lynch agrees: "With as busy as he is, he doesn't get the chance to come around often, so for him to be on campus it's really exciting. For Indiana State to get to honor him for his accomplishments that he did for Indiana State, it's really exciting on campus."

And the week is full of ways to show their pride for #33.

Students can write thank you letters that will be given to Bird when he comes to campus.

Throwback "Bird Watching" t-shirts are available at the student books store, with all of the proceeds donated to the new Larry Legend scholarship.

"I think it's important for us as students to show the gratitude that we have toward Larry," said Lynch.  "It's been a few years since Larry was here it Indiana State doing what he did on the court, but the time has come for us to recognize and honor Larry. I think it's important for the students year to truly say thank you for what he's done for our school."

But the main event comes on Saturday.

That's when students -- and Larry's legions of fans -- get to see the Bird land, as the new 15-foot tall statue is unveiled in front of the Legend himself.

"He's basically the face of Indiana State. He is the best player that's ever gone here for basketball. My dad really always talked about him and I thought it was awesome that when I'm here is when the statue going up," said LeClair. "I think it's awesome to be a part of that, it's definitely a moment in history for ISU to be here as the statue is going up."

We'll continue to bring you Larry Bird stories all week long, leading up to the statue unveiling on Saturday morning.

And you can catch the ISU's men's basketball game right here on NBC 2. Tip off is at 1 p.m.
