First class stamps will now cost 49 cents, a three-cent price hike.

The temporary increase is part of the Postal Service's effort to recover from severe mail decreases, blamed on the 2008 economic depression. The Post Office is trying to recoup $2.8 billion in losses.

The Postal Service calls the increase temporary, saying it will last no more than two years, though inflation over that time could make the rate hike permanent.
