Brian Rickard and Ryan Cook both of Terre Haute, and Ashlee Pugh of Illinois were pronounced dead on the scene, after the truck they were in tried to out run a train on Rio Grande Avenue near Gallagher Road.

Police did find open containers of alcohol in truck, and say speed and alcohol could be a factor in the crash.

According to officials the lights and gates were working at the time of the incident.

"All of our road crossings in Vigo County have an accompanied stop sign with them. That doesn't mean slowdown, that means stop. When the gate is down that doesn't mean go around them, that means stop. And disregarding a railroad signal is a mandatory court appearance," said Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing.

An official cause for the crash has not been determined.

Police are awaiting toxicology results, that could take several weeks.

So how many car versus train collisions happen every year?

We took a look at the data from the Federal Railroad Administration.

There were nearly 2,000 car versus train collisions last year across America.

Indiana and Illinois are tied for the third spot, with 108 accidents each.

When it comes to fatalities, 273 people were killed in the U.S. last year.

Illinois ranks third for train accident deaths with 26, and Indiana came in fourth with 17, but that Hoosier state figure is on the rise, it's up from 10 deaths in 2011.
