Hometown Hero-Derek Hughes

Lawrenceville, Illinois native served 8 years in the Illinois National Guard, including a tour of duty in Iraq. Now a government worker who gives of himself for family and friends.

Our latest Hometown Hero is Derek Hughes. Hughes was a sergaent in the 135th Engineer Company, Company A of the Illinois National Guard.  He served in the Guard from 1999 to 2007, completing a tour of duty in Iraq from 2005 to 2006.

Sgt. Hughes graduated just before his service from Lawerenceville High School. His service has not ended when his military term was up.

He is a letter carrier in Olney but takes time to volunteer as an assistant basketball coach for Parkview Jr. High in Lawrenceville.

He and his wife, Laura, are the proud parents of Gracie and Molly, and according to Jim Wiseman, who nominated him, is very kind and always there to help his fellow man.  That's why Sgt. Derek Hughes is our latest Hometown Hero.
