Glimpse into Friday's Honoring a Legend Ceremony

The ISU Foundation has been working on the dinner and program celebrating alum Larry Bird for nearly six months. The event will be divided into "quarters," taking a look back at Larry's basketball life from high school, ISU, Boston Celtics and coaching the Indiana Pacers. The statue will be unveiled Saturday morning. You can catch the ISU/Ball State basketball game right here on NBC 2.

A basketball icon returns to the Valley Friday night for a special ceremony. "Honoring a Legend" is a dinner and program at the Hulman Center for Indiana State alum Larry Bird.

"I have to imagine that this is probably one of the biggest events in ISU's history," said Ron Carpenter, president of the ISU Foundation.

That's why the school is pulling out all the stops as they prepare to welcome home the most famous Sycamore.

"We have a group of leadership staff from the University, the Foundation and the athletics department working on this event and conceptualizing it," Carpenter explained.

Larry Bird's legendary basketball career is being remember by those who know him both on and off court - and in a way that's speaking Larry's language.

Here's the set-up: The night will be divided into "quarters" starting with his childhood.

"His high school coach coming back was obviously had great influence on Larry as a young man," said Carpenter.

Second quarter is Sycamore time: "The whole '79 team and their spouses will also be at the event, so that collectively is a big piece also for Larry to connect with them and see some of them."

And after the half? "The Boston Celtic years but he was so successful and resurrected the NBA."

And closing out the fourth, back in his home state with the Indiana Pacers."What he's been able to be successful with as far as a winning coach."

THE ISU Foundation team has dedicated six months to this ceremony, and they say all this hard work in the "pre-season" will make the night a slam dunk.

"They'll walk away with a great feeling for a great guy. And hopefully some sense of appreciation for Larry's career and how meaningful it has been," said Carpenter.

And bring this legendary past back to life.

Want to relive that moment a little bit, a little nostalgic, but recognize a true distinguished alumnus. In fact probably our most distinguished alumnus we have out there anywhere,” said Carpenter.

The Larry Bird statue unveiling and dedicating is Saturday at 11:30. That’s followed by the ISU/Ball State basketball game.

You can catch all the action right here on NBC 2. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
