Winter Weather Keeping Insurance Agents Busy

Agents at American Family Insurance in Terre Haute say they've had more claims. Most of them are for winter incidents, like frozen pipes, a space heater fire, or snow damaged roof. Luckily those things are covered under basic insurance, but it's always good to check in.
Insurance companies are also well-prepared during this winter, making sure our homes and apartments are covered.

Agents at American Family Insurance in Terre Haute say they've had more claims.

Most of them are for winter incidents, like frozen pipes, a space heater fire, or snow damaged roof.

Luckily those things are covered under basic insurance, but it's always good to check in.

"It's always a good idea to go visit your agent and go over all your coverages because you need to know again what your deductibles are, all your covered perils are. As an agent, sometimes we won't see people for a couple of years after we insure their home and of course we want to know that they have the adequate coverage," said Vicki Welsh, an agent with American Family Insurance.

Experts also say that renters insurance is very unsold, so you should look for coverage if you're a renter.

Welsh adds that in busy times like now, they will hire or sub-contact more adjusters to keep claims moving quickly, but still - be patient.

"It kind of depends on the severity of the claim," she said. "If we have someone who, their house is burned down and we have to find a place for them to live, provide them with clothing and food...that's gonna take precedence over someone who has a small claim and their house is still livable."
