Vigo County Parks Adding Hundreds of Acres

The department is acquiring 822 acres of land from Pfizer Inc in southern Vigo County. Officials say they will take the next year to plan out a design, but are working to build a dog park, walking and riding trails, as well as a hunting area.
The Vigo County parks system is planning a big expansion.

The department is acquiring 822 acres of land from Pfizer Inc in southern Vigo County.
   
Officials say they will take the next year to plan out a design, but are working to build a dog park, walking and riding trails, as well as a hunting area.
   
And hope that the new space will help residents enjoy the outdoors even more.

"We are ecstatic, this is just an incredible project that we've been able to have come across our plate," said parks superintendent Kara Kish.  "Obviously we're here because we believe in the availability in the use of public space, and so that is what were going to be able to do, is expanded on that and offer more public land that's open and free to the public."

The new addition will give the Vigo County parks 40 percent more space than they already have.
   
The land was paid for through a donations from the Wabash Valley Community Foundation and the Vigo County Redevelopment Commission
