Sycamores Fall to Dallas Baptist Saturday

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State jumped out to a 3-0 lead but could not make it stand as the Dallas Baptist Patriots rallied to take the lead in the fifth and defeat the Sycamores 8-5 in a Missouri Valley Conference game Saturday on Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium.

Indiana State (28-13, 8-6 MVC) and Dallas Baptist (28-14 8-4 MVC) have each won a game in the series with the rubber game scheduled for Sunday. First pitch has been moved up to 12:45 p.m. (ET) due to expected weather moving into the area late Sunday afternoon.

The loss snapped a five game home winning streak for the Sycamores, a four game overall winning streak, and a three game winning streak over the Patriots.

Brad Lombard started on the mound for the Sycamores and went seven innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking two.  The Sycamore junior falls to 6-2 on the season with the loss. Austin Conway came on and pitched the final two innings, shutting out the Patriots on two hits while striking out two and walking none.

Indiana State took the early lead for the second time in the series with a run on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. Landon Curry and Cody Zimmerman opened the game with back-to-back singles but Curry was out at the plate trying to score when Jacob Hayes hit into a fielder’s choice. Brian Romero put the Sycamores in front with a two-out double, his second extra base hit of the series.

The Sycamores built a 3-0 lead in the second by scoring two more runs on three hits. Connor McClain hit a one-out single to right and went to second when the ball was misplayed by the Patriots right fielder. Derek Hannahs followed with a double to score McClain and scored himself on a two-out single up the middle by Zimmerman.

The Patriots came back with a single run in the fourth and scored four runs in the fifth to take a  5-3 lead. That advantage grew to 6-3 before the Sycamores responded in the bottom of the sixth. Zahn singles and went to second as McClain put down a sacrifice bunt that he almost beat out. Hannahs followed with a single that put runners on the corner and both moved up a base, Zahn scoring, when the Patriots pitcher was called for a balk. After Curry and Zimmerman both walked, Hannahs scored the second run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Dallas Baptist scored two more runs in the top of the seventh and Indiana State could not answer in their final three at-bats.

The Sycamores scored five runs on 11 hits but left 10 runners on base during the game. Cody Zimmerman led the way at the plate for Indiana State with three singles in four at bats and both moved up a base, Zahn scoring, when the Patriots pitcher was called for a balk. After Curry and Zimmerman both walked, Hannahs scored the second run of the inning on a wild pitch.
