Sycamore Softball Splits with Drake

A record day for ISU softball Saturday.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind.—Sophomore Abbie Malchow finished the day 4-4 at the plate and a double away from the cycle as the Indiana State softball team split with the Bulldogs of Drake on senior Day at Price Field. In the split, the team broke school records in runs scored with 209 and RBI's with 179 and their 25 wins is fourth most in ISU history.

Game One

In the first game of the day, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring one run off a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead.

The Sycamores answered back in the bottom of the first as senior Morgan Allee led off with a walk and stole second base before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by junior Aubre Carpenter. Allee then scored on an RBI groundout to second base by freshman Erika Crissman.

In the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs retook the lead scoring one run off a single before a double. The Bulldogs were then awarded one more run when freshman catch Brooke Riemenschneider made a take down the third base line on Drake's Hayley Nybo. However, the home plate umpire made the judgement that the Riemenschneider obstructed Nybo before she got close to the plate, scoring a second run in the inning to give Drake a 3-1 lead.

Drake then added three runs in the fifth before Malchow cut into the Bulldogs lead with her first home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the fifth.

Drake then added three more runs in the top of the 6th and went on to defeat the Sycamores 9-3.

Malchow finished the first game 2-2 at the plate with a home run and an RBI while junior Megan Stone was 2-3 with a double.

Game Two

In the second game of the day, the Sycamores jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when freshman Kassie Brown drew a one out walk before Crissman hit an RBI double to score Brown and give the Sycamores a 1-0 lead. Stone then drove in Crissman with an RBI double to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the second, junior Yvette Alvarez extended the Sycamore advantage to 3-0 when she crushed her second home run of the season over the left center field wall.

The Sycamores struck again in the bottom of the 5th when Crissman led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stone. Abbie Malchow then hit a line drive into the right center field gap for her first career triple to score Crissman. Senior Shelby Wilson then scored Malchow on a squeeze to make it 5-0, Sycamores.

Drake answered in the top of the sixth with a three-run home run but could get no closer as sophomore Taylor Lockwood pitched a complete game, seven innings, to earn the win by a score of 5-3. Lockwood allowed just four hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts.

On the day, Malchow finished 4-4 with a triple, home run, three RBI's and two runs scored while Stone was 3-5 with two doubles.

The rubber match of the three-game series will take place at 12 p.m. Sunday at Price Field in the final home game of the season for the Sycamores.
