Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology track and field athletes combined for 17 all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference awards, led by five first-team members and the Men's Coach of the Year.Rose-Hulman's five conference champions earned first-team all-league recognition, with three men and two women capturing top honors. The effort resulted in Rose-Hulman's seventh consecutive HCAC Men's Outdoor Championship.Men's first-team honorees and conference champions included freshman Nathan Green (Columbus, Ind./North) in the pole vault (14' 6 1/4"); freshman Andrew Okruch (Mt. Washington, Ky./Bullitt East) in the shot put (48' 10 3/4"); and freshman Brendan Smyth (Antwerp, Belgium/International School) in the triple jump (42' 11").The women's squad also featured two first-team all-league honorees who each set new school records in their respective events. Sophomore Addie Johnson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) recorded a time of 1:03.81 in the 400-meter hurdles; and senior Ryann-Rebecca Montgomery (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) won the 5,000 meters in 18:04.27. In addition, head coach Larry Cole received his 14th career conference Coach of the Year award and his 12th in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference after leading the men's team to its seventh straight outdoor league title. Members of the coaching staff included distance coach Geoff Wayton, throws coach Christy Sherman, and volunteer assistants Liz Evans and Jake Isaacson.Second-team all-conference award winners included Rose-Hulman's second-place finishers in respective events. On the men's side, second-team honorees were led by senior Andy Hunkeler (Kokomo, Ind./Northwestern). He placed second in the shot put (48' 2"), discus throw (141' 4") and hammer throw (153' 3").Junior Blake Schulthies (Dubois, Ind./Northeast Dubois) added two runner-up efforts in the pole vault (14' 0 1/2") and the 400-meter hurdles (54.32 seconds). Other second-place all-league team members included senior Philip Koranteng (Sterling, Va./Dominion) in the 200-meter dash (22.98 seconds) and junior Stuart West (La Porte) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:41.91).The 4-x-100 meter relay and 4-x-400 meter relay squads also came home second to place their athletes on the all-conference second team. The 4-x-100 team included Koranteng, freshman Adam Wilson (Mecca, Ind./Riverton Parke), freshman Isaiah Smith (Shelbyville) and senior Clay Becker (Gaylord, Mich./St. Mary Cathedral) in a time of 42.92 seconds. The 4-x-400 meter team included Smith, sophomore Tyler Duffy (Fishers/Hamilton Southeastern), freshman Brendon Mattiuz (Fishers) and Blake Schulthies in 3:23.34.Junior Austin Schulthies (Dubois, Ind./Northeast Dubois) captured honorable mention all-conference honors for tallying finishes of third in the long jump (20' 11 3/4"), fourth in the discus (136' 5") and fourth in the high jump (6' 2") for a total of 16 points.Members of the HCAC Sportsmanship Team were also named in the release of the all-conference squad. This year's included Hunkeler for the men's squad and multiple event sophomore Lucinda Combs (Danville, Ky./Boyle County) on the women's side.Individuals from Rose-Hulman will compete at the Billy Hayes Invitational at Indiana University on Saturday.
