The Prestolite battery factory operated in Vincennes for 40 years. Now, in its place on N. 6th St. sits a Lowes, two restaurants, two banks a hotel and a convenience store.

Back in 1985, Prestolite closed leaving and abandoned and dilapidated building. The soil was so contaminated with lead it became an EPA Superfund site. Construction company owner Rex Alton purchased the property and was able to work with Prestolite and the EPA to get the site clean.

In 1997, the old building was torn down and new development was able to eventually start moving in.
