President Authorizes Military Action in Iraq

The first combat activity since 2011 in Iraq is taking place after bombs were dropped in the country on Friday.
Laser guided bombs were dropped by the United States on Friday, after President Obama authorized airstrikes on Thursday.

The 500 pound bombs were dropped near Irbil on a Islamic State of Iraq, or ISIS, military artillery unit. They were dropped from F-18s that launched from the Carrier USS George H.W. Bush.

Three US jets also dropped over 50 bundles of relief supplies to help tens of thousands of refugees trapped on a mountaintop surrounded by militants. The 40,000 people include Christians and members of a small sect named Yazidi.

President Obama said he will not send US ground troops to fight.

This marks the first combat activity in Iraq since 2011.
