The university is hoping this new center will draw all different types of students- from those who live on campus, to commuter and non traditional students.
Next year, the student center at Vincennes University will not only be in a new spot, it will have a very different feel.
"In essence, it will have kind of a mall effect for students," said VU President Dick Helton.
The building will be connected to the Physical Education Complex, the Aquatic Center, and the Student Recreation Center. Students will be able to pass from one building, into another without going outside.
"This is where we want students to come, to congregate, to socialize," said President Helton.
The university is hoping it will benefit, not only current students but future one as well.
"We believe that the whole student comes to school. And while we stress the academic side, we also know there is value in growing emotionally and growing socially," he added.
The student center is going to cost $4.35 million. Officials approved the bids for construction on Wednesday. Two companies from Terre Haute, a company from Vincennes and a company from Evansville each won contracts.
The university is hoping to break ground on the project in the next two to three weeks. After talking to students on campus, they are looking forward to the new center. They said that they're excited at the convenience of having everything under one roof. The project should take anywhere from 13 to 15 months. The university says the new center should be open in October or November, next year.
