Michele Barrett is ISU's new assistance police chief. She has more than 20 years of police experience and is currently a lieutenant with the Terre Haute Police Department.

The first female lieutenant on Terre Haute's police force is ISU's new assistant police chief.

The university says Michele Barrett is coming on board.

She'll take over the role previously held by newly-selected Chief Joe Newport on August 1.

ISU representatives say she brings more than 20 years of police work to the table.

Barrett is currently a lieutenant with the Terre Haute Police Department. She was also the first female member of the Special Response Team and has been recognized with the United States Attorney Award for Excellence for collaborating with the FBI in solving 12 robberies throughout Indiana.
