MathCounts Competition Heats up Wabash Valley

School work on a Saturday, that's almost unheard of. That's not the case for a group of Vigo County middle school students.
School work on a Saturday, that's almost unheard of.

That's not the case for a group of Vigo County middle schoolers.

Sixth, 7th, and 8th graders from across the county gathered at Rose-Hulman for the annual MathCounts competition Saturday.

The students took a series of timed math tests.

They then took part in a team competition.

The top two move to the state Mathcounts weekend.

Organizers say the program prepares students for careers in math and science.

"It's the STEM, mathematics is everything. If you're going to be in science or engineering you have to do the math, and these kids like it," Elton Graves, the competition's local organizer.

The state math counts competition will be held in Terre Haute next month.

Hundreds of "mathletes" are expected in town for the event.
