Long-time Pence adviser stepping down

The Governor's chief of staff and long-time adviser is resigning. He's going to start his own public affairs and strategic communications firm.

The governor is losing his right hand man.

Governor Pence's office says chief of staff and long-time adviser, Bill Smith, is stepping down.

He's going to start his own public affairs and communications firm. The new firm will work with the Governor's campaign.

Smith worked as chief of staff for pence when he was a Congressman and he was senior adviser for the 2012 gubernatorial campaign.

The Governor thanked Smith "for his tireless service to the state of Indiana" in a statement Wednesday.
