Local School Corp. Taking Proactive Approach to Bullying

Indiana released its first assessment showing the number of bullying reports at public schools for the 2013 - 2014 school year. One local school corporation reported a high number of incidents.
In one school year, over 9,000 bulllying cases were reported in Indiana.

200 of them were in the Vincennes Community School Corporation.

School officials say that's because they encourage their students to speak up if they are bullied.

"In large part, the reason why they are higher is because we've taken a very proactive stance in the VCSC and we do not tolerate bullying," said Vincennes Community School Corporation Superintendent Greg Parsley.

The school corporation's hands-on approach in regards to bullying is something one parent is happy to see.

"I think they need to because if you don't do nothing about it now, then it gets too widespread," said parent James Ransom. "Then you won't be able to do nothing about it."

Superintendent Parsley says the school has held several sessions educating students and faculty on the issue of bullying.

He mentions some key personnel who are vital to the school's anti-bullying approach.

"I think some positions that sometimes get lost in the shuffle are our guidance counselors and social workers," added Parsley. "We employ social workers in every one of our buildings and they too are in turn the most hands on when it comes to the bullying."

The school's social workers and counselors are the ones most equipped to assist students who have been bullied.

Parsley hopes students never hesitate to visit them if they are bullied.

"Students should feel very comfortable in coming to them, reporting to them in a confidential manner, knowing that it will be addressed," Parsley said.

In total, there were 9,396 reported cases in the state last year.

44% of the cases were verbal incidents, 21% were physical, and the remainder were either written or electronic threats.
